As one of the UK’s leading First Aid training providers, Imperative understands the need for every person to have the skills to save a life if called upon.

That’s why we hold free monthly courses in our local community to educate people in basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

These courses, held at the Hamilton Davies Trust in Cadishead, are open to everyone in the local area and are conducted by one of Imperative’s experienced trainers.

What is CPR or an AED and why are they important?

CPR is a combination of chest compressions and rescue breaths, given to someone whose heart has stopped beating or entered cardiac arrest. This continues pushing oxygenated blood around the body to vital organs.

Once the heart stops beating due to cardiac arrest, the only definitive way to restart it is through use of an AED. Despite this, lack of confidence can sometimes mean bystanders hesitate or do not feel like they would know how to use an AED.

An AED is designed so that it can be used by any bystander responding to a cardiac arrest - with instructions to guide the user through each step.

Prompt CPR and use of an AED can improve survival rates for someone who has suffered cardiac arrest from below 10% to above 70%.

What is covered on the course?

The course typically runs for around three hours, covering a range of basic life support techniques - from CPR and AED use and recognising the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest to carrying out a primary survey and moving a casualty into the recovery position.

Learners are encouraged to get hands-on during the course, with the opportunity to try out their CPR skills on a manikin as well as using a training defibrillator. For some people, this will be the first time they have seen a defibrillator in the flesh and offers a vital insight into how simple the devices are to use.

The course is designed to build confidence in people who may find themselves in a situation where they need to perform CPR or first aid.

Why choose Imperative?

As passionate providers of first aid training, our mission is to equip everyone with the skills to save a life. For over two decades
