The moment we have all been anticipating has finally arrived. Season 2 of Stranger Things has finally hit Netflix.

We are about to get answers to some very important questions we have all been pondering over for the last year. ‘Where is Eleven now?’ ‘Is Will actually OK?’ are just a few questions that have been thrown around the Imperative office.

Something tells us that part of the Upside Down is now within Will after witnessing him cough up a slug-like creature following his rescue from the alternate dimension. It was then it became clear that the Demogorgon was not in fact finished with him just yet.

Before you kick back with some popcorn to take a trip back to the town of Hawkins, Indiana, find out how some first aid knowledge could have helped the characters in season 1.

The Power of Knowledge

Following the vanishing of Will Byers, the characters were affected by a chain of events as a result of investigating and trying to find the twelve-year-old boy.

We were introduced to the character Eleven at the beginning of the series and quickly learned about her psychokinetic abilities and the nosebleeds she experienced after using her powers. Unfortunately, Mike, Dustin and Lucas were seemingly unable to treat Eleven’s nosebleeds that she would be faced with, temporarily.

You may experience nosebleeds similar to Eleven, although assumingly not as a result of psychokinetic abilities. If you did suffer a nosebleed it is important to follow these steps:

  1. Sit up straight with your head tilted slightly forward.
  2. Pinch the soft part of your nose shut.
  3. Apply an ice pack to your nose and cheeks.
  4. Continue to pinch your nose for 10 minutes.

In addition to nosebleeds, Eleven also experienced fainting episodes after exhausting her powers and becoming drained. Fainting is a brief loss of responsiveness that can be a reaction to pain, exhaustion, a lack of food or emotional stress.

Seemingly, Mike, Dustin and Lucas didn’t have the time to treat Eleven properly following her fainting episodes due to having to run from Brenner and fight off the Demogorgon. However, there are certain steps you should take to treat a casualty who has fainted in order to ensure a swift recovery:

  1. Advise the casualty to lie down. Kneel down and raise their legs on your shoulders to improve blood flow to the brain.
  2. Ensure there is plenty of fresh air circulating by opening a window and ensuring other people do not get too close to the casualty.
  3. As they begin to recover, reassure and sit them up gradually. If they still feel faint, advise them to lie down again.

Bad Blood for Barb

Lucky for us, if we experience blood loss from a wound, we are not at risk of attracting a Demogorgon in the same way the characters from Stranger Things are. Barb sadly died as a result of a bleeding wound that was left untreated as she was sat by the pool, allowing the blood to drip into the water and attract the Demogorgon.

You can control a bleeding wound by elevating it and applying pressure to reduce blood loss right away. Call 999 if the wound continues to bleed significantly.

CPR Saves Lives

As we saw in the season 1 finale of Stranger Things, knowing CPR can save lives. Joyce and Hopper appeared to have found Will just in time to resuscitate him and rescue him from the Upside Down. Sadly, if neither Joyce or Hopper had not known how to perform CPR effectively, Will’s chance of survival and making it out of the Upside Down would have been very slim.

If you find yourself faced with a non-responsive casualty, knowing CPR can greatly increase their chance of survival when waiting for the emergency services to arrive to the scene. As it stands, just 22% of people in the UK would be confident enough to perform CPR on a stranger which unfortunately results in a number of preventable deaths occurring every year.

When you perform CPR, you are effectively taking over the role of the victim’s heart and lungs by pumping blood and oxygen around the body. To do this, you will need to use a combination of chest compressions to keep the circulation going and rescue breaths to inflate the lungs. Hands-only CPR can also be used if you are untrained in rescue breaths.

Although you may not have Eleven’s psychokinetic abilities, using this knowledge can result in an even stronger power; the ability to save lives!

Ready for Season 2

Season 2 has a lot of questions to answer. Is Hawkins safe? Will Eleven return safe and sound? We are hoping to see that the characters of Stranger Things have brushed up on their First Aid knowledge, we have a feeling they may need to become more equipped for what they could potentially be faced with.
