We’ve reached day 9 of our Christmas first aid special and Frosty the Snowman has been brought to life to tell you everything you need to know about first aid kits.

A first aid kit is an essential piece of equipment that should be found in all public places. Having a fully stocked first aid kit available will help to ensure that any minor injuries or accidents can be effectively treated to avoid any further damage.

Treating a first aid injury will also help to bide time while waiting for emergency services to arrive, if it is more severe.

When was the last time you checked your first aid kit?

Contents of your kit

A good first aid kit will include each of the following items:

  • Plasters in different shapes and sizes
  • Small, medium and large sterile gauze dressings
  • At least two sterile eye dressings
  • Triangular bandages
  • Crêpe rolled bandages
  • Safety pins
  • Disposable sterile gloves
  • Tweezers
  • Scissors
  • Alcohol-free cleansing wipes
  • Sticky tape
  • Thermometer
  • Skin rash cream
  • Cream or spray to relieve insect bites and stings
  • Antiseptic cream
  • Painkillers such as paracetamol, aspirin or ibuprofen
  • Cough medicine
  • Antihistamine tablets
  • Distilled water for cleaning wounds
  • Eyewash and eye bath
  • Accident report book

For items like dressings and medicines, it is important to perform regular checks to ensure that they are in date and will not cause further harm to the patient. Whether it is a safety pin, or a sterile dressing, everything in a first aid kit has its use and should be replenished immediately if used or out of date.

Keeping a first aid manual in your kit may also be useful, even for those who have completed training, as knowledge can deteriorate within 3 months of a course being taken. A manual will help to refresh or give knowledge in a first aid emergency and guarantee that the correct steps are being taken.

Be prepared

A fully-stocked first aid kit will provide you with the resources you need to deal with a first aid emergency for yourself and others around you. Even Frosty the Snowman knows the importance of carrying a first aid kit on his trek to the North Pole.
