The Resuscitation Council was established in 1983 to promote high-quality practice in all aspects of cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
 
Every five years, after carrying out extensive research, the organisation formulates appropriate guidelines for the resuscitation process. These guidelines are followed by health care professionals and first aid training organisations to ensure that learners are given the appropriate training to carry out successful CPR.
